What鈥檚 happening at your internship?
I am a digital technology intern working with LITS, and working primarily with data entry. We have received a few assignments from staff in LITS about tasks they have not been able to get to and working on them. For example, I have worked a lot on reviewing international scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students at Bryn Mawr and organizing them into Excel. Additionally, I have done the same for professors. Outside of this, I have worked with user testing: interviewing students, staff, and faculty about a website we are creating to sort through internships; and creating documents aiding in accessibility for the College with HTML.
We have had the opportunity to attend many workshops during the job as well. Whether it has to do with web design, interview skills, or how to effectively search for internships, it has been a fun experience to learn new skills every week.
Why did you apply for this internship?
I applied for this internship because I am interested in going into library science after graduation and am looking to learn new skills. I thought this would be a good opportunity for me as I have not been on campus since March 2020 and due to the fact that it is in the College's library.
Can you talk about the skills you are learning and why they are important to you?
I have learned a lot of new skills in Excel this summer along with HTML. Before beginning this internship, I only knew the very basics of Excel. But using College resources, I am now able to create dropdown menus, buttons, along with many other organization and search features that I never knew of or knew how to use before. I can now say that after this internship I am comfortable with using Excel. Additionally, I have started to learn HTML for web design. I have experience with both Python and Java but not HTML before this internship, so it is great to have some new skills!
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced at your internship?
I think the biggest challenge I have faced during this internship is communication. My job has a lot of combinations between independent and group work, so it is always really important to talk with my coworkers to make sure we are completing everything that we need to. We have a chat system when we are not near each other where we all communicate and share different files for what we are working on, along with setting up meetings with specifics that we would like to discuss.
