The Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research (GSSWSR) was well represented this year by Bryn Mawr faculty, students, and alumni at the annual conference for the Society for Social Work Research (SSWR) in San Francisco.

GSSWSR faculty David S. Byers and Cindy Sousa joined Odessa Gonzalez Benson of the University of Michigan and Altaf Husain and Tamarah Moss of Howard University for a roundtable discussion titled 鈥淭ranslation Within International Qualitative Inquiry: Power, Positionality, and Creation of Meaning.鈥 Reflecting on their research in Cote d'ivoire, the Netherlands, the U.S., The Bahamas, and Palestine, the group discussed strategies for research across languages, attentive to neocolonial bias in language translation.

Also at the conference, Sousa and Ph.D. candidate Sarah Slates joined Manahil Siddiqi of the University of Washington for a presentation titled 鈥淭he Vulnerabilities and Strengths of Parents Within the Context of Community Violence: Results of a Systemic Literature Review.鈥 Sousa also presented a paper, with Bree Akesson of Wilfred Laurier University, on the resilience of Syrian refugee parents living in Lebanon. Dean Janet Shapiro joined GSSWSR alum Jillian Graves and Christina Marsack, both faculty members at Eastern Michigan, for a presentation titled 鈥淔ormulating a Developmental Approach to Crisis Management for Families with ASD and Schizophrenia.鈥

SSWR is among the leading social work research organizations, and its annual conference draws contributors from around the world to present current work.
