Geling Yan Lecture 'The Price of Free Expression'
杏吧原版影音 invites you to a conversation with novelist and screenwriter Geling Yan 严歌苓 on "The Price of Free Expression" on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. EST.
Chinese-born American novelist and screenwriter Geling Yan has enjoyed international success: she published over 40 books that have been translated into 21 languages, and she is the recipient of over 30 literary and film awards. She collaborated with famous Chinese directors on adaptations of her stories for film and TV, and had millions of readers in Mainland China. But in 2020, she was unofficially censored and blacklisted in China—a punishment for open dissent. For Yan and other intellectuals in Mainland China, what is the price of free expression? And what thematic and discursive boundaries must be crossed for that price to be paid? Now based in Berlin, Yan will discuss the different cultures of free speech in Germany, the U.S., and China. This event will be in English.
This event is cosponsored by the Emily Balch Seminar, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Department of German and German Studies.
